Involuntary Treatment in BC: Law, Practice, and Lived Experience

We are pleased to welcome presenters from Health Justice, an organization focused entirely on law and policy related to involuntary mental health and substance use treatment, for a virtual discussion with leaders and community members from across the brain injury sector.

We will be joined by Kendra Milne, a lawyer and executive director who has worked in human rights and mental health law for over 20 years, and Sarah, a person with extensive lived and living experience, including over 40 years navigating the psychiatric system and 45 years navigating the world with brain injuries.

Please note this session will not be recorded. We encourage you to attend live to take part in the discussion.

This session will explore myths and realities related to involuntary treatment for people experiencing mental health, substance use, and brain injury-related health issues. We will share accessible information about the law in BC, contextualized lived experience of how it is operating in practice, to understand the full context of BC’s current policy directions related to involuntary treatment.

The session will explore:

· The realities of what the health system can currently offer people experiencing mental health, substance use, and brain injury-related health issues.

· The ways that involuntary treatment is already being used in response to these health issues.

· Moving beyond theory to understand what the experience of involuntary treatment means in practice in BC.

· BC’s current approach to monitoring and evaluating the use of involuntary treatment.

The session will include a presentation followed by short, moderated discussion. To support a thoughtful and productive presentation, participants are invited to complete a survey to share their questions and priorities for discussionShare Your Questions and Priorities for the June 26, 2026 Webinar – Fill out form

Please complete the survey by Friday, June 19.

Held during Brain Injury Awareness Month, this event is part of a broader effort to strengthen understanding, dialogue, and coordination across sectors supporting individuals affected by brain injury in British Columbia.

We look forward to having you join us.
