OBIA’s Fly the Flag Campaign

by

A special shout out to the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA) during Brain Injury Awareness Month.

OBIA’s Fly the Flag campaign is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people with lived experience and families turn their stories into action.

Some of the most important advances in brain injury awareness do not begin in boardrooms, policy discussions, or research studies. They begin when survivors and families have the courage to speak about what they have lived through and insist that others pay attention. Their experiences reveal gaps that systems cannot see, challenge assumptions, and create opportunities for education, awareness, and change.

This campaign also reflects a core principle of the National Strategy for Brain Injury (www.nationalstrategyonbraininjury.ca): when survivors and families are empowered to share their experiences and lead alongside organizations, researchers, clinicians, and governments, they become a powerful force for awareness, innovation, and systems change.

Across Canada, we are seeing the impact of lived experience leadership. From raising awareness about the connection between non-fatal overdose and brain injury, to identifying gaps in care and support, survivors and families continue to shape conversations that might otherwise remain hidden. Their voices are helping build a stronger, more responsive brain injury system for everyone.

We want to recognize OBIA for elevating the voices of their communities and helping transform lived experience into a national conversation that is educating communities, reducing stigma, and expanding awareness. Thank you to the survivors, families, and advocates whose experiences inspired this work. Your stories are creating change.

We also encourage everyone to learn more about OBIA’s Brain Injury Awareness Month campaign and the powerful story behind this year’s flag, a symbol of awareness, remembrance, resilience, and hope.
