SUMMARY:Involuntary Treatment in BC: Law\, Practice\, and Lived Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about BC’s involuntary treatment for people experiencing mental health\, substance use\, and brain-injury related issues. \n\n\n\nRegister here. \n\n\n\nInvoluntary Treatment in BC: Law\, Practice\, and Lived Experience\n\n\n\nWe are pleased to welcome presenters from Health Justice\, an organization focused entirely on law and policy related to involuntary mental health and substance use treatment\, for a virtual discussion with leaders and community members from across the brain injury sector. \n\n\n\nWe will be joined by Kendra Milne\, a lawyer and executive director who has worked in human rights and mental health law for over 20 years\, and Sarah\, a person with extensive lived and living experience\, including over 40 years navigating the psychiatric system and 45 years navigating the world with brain injuries. \n\n\n\nPlease note this session will not be recorded. We encourage you to attend live to take part in the discussion. \n\n\n\nThis session will explore myths and realities related to involuntary treatment for people experiencing mental health\, substance use\, and brain injury-related health issues. We will share accessible information about the law in BC\, contextualized lived experience of how it is operating in practice\, to understand the full context of BC’s current policy directions related to involuntary treatment. \n\n\n\nThe session will explore: \n\n\n\n· The realities of what the health system can currently offer people experiencing mental health\, substance use\, and brain injury-related health issues. \n\n\n\n· The ways that involuntary treatment is already being used in response to these health issues. \n\n\n\n· Moving beyond theory to understand what the experience of involuntary treatment means in practice in BC. \n\n\n\n· BC’s current approach to monitoring and evaluating the use of involuntary treatment. \n\n\n\nThe session will include a presentation followed by short\, moderated discussion.
